John 6:53-57
(4 in)
For Catholic Christians, John 6 is central to a Catholic's belief that at Mass after the priest, in the person of Christ, prays over the bread and wine during the consecration, that a miracle occurs in changing the substance of the bread and wine to Jesus' actual body and blood.
Verses 53-57 says "53Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. 54Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. 55For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. 57Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me."
John chapter 6 starts of with the miracle of Jesus walking on water and the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fish. Then it moves on to Jesus explaining the the miraculous change of bread to Jesus' body and blood. As Catholics read John 6, they notice that Jesus, as the great Teacher, does not back away from his message when the first group, the crowd, questions his credibility, then the second group, some disciples, also question his words because they sound literal, and then the third group, the apostles, have a hard time with what Jesus is saying. Never does Jesus back down from his message and say that He is speaking symbolically or figuratively. Each group understands Jesus as speaking literal and Jesus affirms and continues with his literal language. So John 6 verses 53-57 highlights how literal Jesus is in what he is saying.
